Many Catholics don’t realize that the Bible as we know it today was compiled by the Catholic Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. For the first 400 years of Christianity, believers didn’t have personal copies of Scripture. Instead, they learned the faith through oral tradition and the teaching authority of the Church. This is why sola scriptura—the idea that Scripture alone is all we need—is false. We need Sacred Tradition and the Church’s authority to rightly interpret the Word of God. Without these, confusion and division take hold.
Fr. Dom also emphasized that reading Scripture should not be passive—it should stir our souls. When the Jewish people in Nehemiah’s time heard the Word of God proclaimed, they stood in reverence, recognizing its holiness. That’s why we stand when the Gospel is read at Mass! Scripture is meant to pierce our hearts and set them on fire. If we aren’t being changed by what we read, we need to ask ourselves: Are we truly engaging with it?
